What Is Oil Palm
The Oil palm is a tropical palm tree. There are two species, the better-known one is the one originating from Guinea, Africa, and was first illustrated by Nicholaas Jacquin in 1763, hence its name, Elaeis guineensis Jacq. The other species is Elaeis oleifera is native to tropical Central America and South America.
The generic name is derived from Greek for oil, elaion, while the species name refers to its country of origin.
Palm oil is also known as Red palm oil is a strong, savory, and earthy-tasting vegetable oil that is derived from palm fruit. It is often used for cooking purposes.
- Naturally, it is reddish in color due to the high content of beta carotene.
- It is rich in saturated vegetable fats and becomes semi-solid at room temperature.
- Due to saturated vegetable fats, it helps to increase LDL cholesterol and prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- It consists of fatty acids along with cholesterol. It has a high content of saturated fat.
- As it is versatile, it is used in detergents, food products, and cosmetics.
- Nowadays it is highly used as biofuel.
